As a Central Illinois product photographer, I love working with local brands that are bringing joy to their community. Andrea, from The Wink House in Peoria, is doing just that. Her business houses over 40 other small businesses and brands, including Heywell, giving them a space to been seen and celebrated.
When shopping for my next shop + shoot (a session where I visit local small businesses, purchase products, and do a complimentary shoot), I knew I wanted something fun, summery, and new to my portfolio. Sparkling water is all the rage and when I spotted these colorful, happy cans in the fridge I couldn’t resist.
+ Planning Strategic, Joyful Product Photos
Before I pick up the camera, even for a creative, portfolio-building session like this one, I go through the steps of my planning process. This begins with a deep-dive into the brand. Who are Heywell? What do they believe in? What is the vibe of their brand?
Through this research, I learned that Heywell is “function-forward”, vibrant, balanced, modern, and simple. They are meeting people where they are at and making a product that fits into the “demands of modern life”.
Since it’s summer here in Central Illinois and the pickleball courts are packed to the brim, it was the perfect opportunity to set the scene. Drawing on the energy, focus, and hydration aspects of the brand, the goal was to showcase this sparkling water as the go-to pairing for any summertime match.
You deserve product photos that are not only beautiful, but work hard for you. And that starts with a solid understanding of your brand, goals, and vision.

+ Let’s Chat Photoshoot Props
Planning an impactful, strategic photosession does not have to be expensive or over the top. Sometimes more is better, but in this case, keeping things simple allowed the brand to shine.
Believe it or not, I only used 4 props for this shoot:
- Pickleball paddles
- Pickleballs
- Lemons
- A woven bag
It’s all about using what you have to it’s fullest potential! Moving props around, not staying in one place too long, and moving your body to get different viewpoints. For me, this is when that “flow state” really kicks in and the creativity blossoms. It’s so important for me to do these creative, low-pressure sessions as they allow me to try things that I may otherwise be hesitant to.
Next time you’re feeling like you’re in a creative rut, pop over and support a local business. Pick a product or two that speaks to you, grab a few props from things you have at home or a local craft store, and give yourself the space to just play. I promise it will make the world of difference. Now let’s hop into the photos!
